Biometrics

A phased awareness program in Oyo
Measures to be implemented in the current semester itself

Hyderabad: Principals of the colleges are being trained on the implementation of biometric attendance system in all government, private, autonomous degree and PG colleges under Osmania University. Degree, PG, Engineering, B.Ed, M.Ed, Law, B.Pharmacy, M.Pharmacy, MBA, MCA colleges are around 700 affiliated to OU. The principals of these colleges are being made aware of biometric attendance for three days in phases. The awareness program which started on the 7th of this month will end on Thursday. Recently the Registrar of Osmania University issued a circular to colleges to make biometric attendance mandatory. .The managements of the colleges have been warned to install biometric machines immediately, otherwise action will be taken as per the rules of the university. To this extent, biometric machines are being installed and principals are being made aware of this system.

Compulsory from next academic year

Biometric attendance system is going to be implemented in the affiliated colleges of Osmania University from the new academic year starting from June. Before that, steps are being taken to implement this system experimentally in the current semester academic year as well. By implementing biometric attendance in the current semester, there is an opportunity to identify and correct any errors. But this semester biometric attendance system along with paper attendance system which is going on at present will be implemented equally.

twice a day

In the biometric attendance system, the faculty and students of the colleges have to give their biometric twice a day. Students and teachers who have given their biometrics in the morning will be considered to have attended that day only if they give their biometrics again after six hours. If the biometric is given after three hours it will be considered as one time attendance. Students and teachers studying all types of courses in colleges under Osmania University must register their attendance in this manner.

Students get scholarships and fee reimbursement only if they have 75 percent attendance in colleges. Otherwise they will stop. Apart from that, only students with 75 percent attendance will be allowed to take the exams. Students with low attendance may have to drop out in the first year. OU is also gearing up to take action against the college that violates the norms and revoke the recognition if necessary.

Kallem for colleges

In many private colleges under the Osmania University, if there are seats left in some courses, the private owners have to save the students, and they admit them in the colleges by announcing various offers. They said that they would provide the facility of writing the exams directly without having to come to the college. However, with the implementation of biometric attendance system, the varsity is taking steps to check the attendance of colleges. 75% attendance is mandatory for students to be allowed to appear for examinations along with fee reimbursement and scholarships. In some special cases, if the students have any health problems, they will be allowed to attend even if they have 65% attendance if they submit the doctor’s certificates. Otherwise there is a possibility of stopping the course in the middle.

Till now, even if the students did not attend the colleges, they used to take money and send it to the universities if they had sufficient attendance. There is no possibility to change the attendance of students and faculty. Authorities say that such irregularities can be prevented from now on. Also, it has been revealed in previous government inspections that teachers working in various private colleges are working in two or three colleges. Apart from that, the owners of the private colleges are showing that there are no teachers. According to the number of students, the teachers are shown on the papers and the period is revealed. The varsity feels that the biometric system is the right way to check such bogus teachers and is taking steps to implement it.
